Uptown“The uptown neighborhood, separated from the city's lower or central business district, may often have particularly upscale or fashionable connotations.” Wikipedia Or, maybe it’s just the one word description for the area that encompasses the roots of Oakland’s renaissance with hot new spots for food, art, and entertainment. In any event, it’s our second “neighborhood” blend and the first to only be available in refillable containers. So, how’s it work? If you’re a restaurant, we supply it to you in a keg, almost like draft beer. It’s served by the glass, just like most conventional bottled wines—except there isn’t a bin full of glass to recycle at the end of the night. The “bin full of glass to recycle” part is the same for individuals; the front end of the process is a little different, however. The first time you purchase a “neighborhood”, you’ll purchase a deposit on a one liter bottle. We fill it with wine from our tap and you take it home and enjoy it. When you’re finished, you clean the bottle and bring it back for a refill. It’s pretty simple. We’d love to tell you that this idea was completely original (and that we’re brilliant for thinking of it), but it’s not. The French and Italians have been buying their table wines like this for years. It just works for all of us here because we’re all in a city together—in a neighborhood, to be precise. With every “neighborhood” wine, we try to capture the flavors of Oakland. Uptown is rich and classy and très Right Bank—bright cherry fruit forward and soft tannins from its primary player, Merlot. Cabernet Sauvignon (a blend of clones 337 and 15) provides structure and signature briariness—nothing too over the top, though, since this wine is, literally, made for food. What wouldn’t you pair with Uptown? It’s big enough for steak but priced for meatloaf. It would jazz up a savory poultry dish or enrich a broccoli-and-cheese casserole. It’s great for a before dinner sip but wouldn’t mind helping you finish dessert with a little dark chocolate. It’s all about dinner with panache—even if it’s just leftovers on Wednesday night.
